How to Block Spam on Outlook Express

Receiving spam email can be a pain, especially when it becomes to practically consume your inbox. At one time, I was receiving about 10 spam emails for every 1 legitimate email. It can get to be annoying quickly, but fortunately, there are some ways you can help eliminate, or at least reduce, the amount of spam you can in your email account, particularly if you are using Outlook Express.

The first thing you need to be aware of when you wish to get rid of some of the spam email in your box is the Blocked Sender List feature that Outlook Express provides. Many times, spam regarding the same product or service will come from the same domain name, but the email address will change (for example, me@speed-list.com, tom@speed-list.com, bob@speed-list.com). If you receive 2 emails from each of this spamming business emails, they can add up quickly! What you need to do is block the domain itself so that no emails can contact you…no matter how many more they think up.

To place a domain on the Blocked Sender List, highlight the email in question. On the Menu bar at the top of the application, click ‘Message’ and then choose ‘Block Sender…’ from the drop down menu. Now this only blocks that specific email address. To block all the email address from the domain, you must complete one more step. Select the ‘Tools’ menu from the top of the application, choose ‘Message Rules’ and ‘Blocked Senders List…’ Click over to the ‘Blocked Senders’ tab. Highlight an email address, then click ‘Modify.’ Remove everything up to the @ symbol (leaving the domain.com), then click OK.

Since the above spam blocking method that become quite tedious, especially if you are getting lots of spam emails each day, you may find it a sound investment to download anti-spam software. One such program is called SPAMfighter. This program is free to use, and works efficiently with Outlook Express to rid you of junk in your inbox. There is also a paid Pro edition that has even more features at protecting your email than the standard.

Along with using either method described above, you should always be careful with who you give out your email address to. The more online forms you fill out for sweepstakes, free stuff, information, and website signups, the more you are placing your inbox at risk for spam. This is how many spammers get your email, and those who do not get it directly from you, buy it off others who you have given it to.
